Key points at a glance:
Product Description
With its ARMv8 1.2 GHz Quad Core processor ...
from Broadcom©, the Raspberry Pi 3offers even more performance, a wireless module for WLAN (WiFi) and Bluetooth and remains backwards compatible with Pi 2 and Pi models.
The processor is based on an ARMv8 Broadcom SoC, which has 4 cores (Quad Core CPU) like the Pi 2 model, but the ARM processor of the Raspberry Pi 3 now clocks at 1.2 GHz and is therefore even faster than that of the Pi 2. The CPU now also supports 64 bit applications natively. This makes this SoC board the first native 64-bit Raspberry Pi board for experimenting, tinkering and developing!
Its use as a power-saving desktop replacement in the office or study, or as a thin client, media centre or in complex technical systems has been significantly improved. These applications run more smoothly and yet the system remains very energy efficient.
The dimensions of the RasPi3 remain HAT compatible. The board is therefore the same size as the RasPi2, or the B+.
All connections (for image, sound and LAN / USB data) have remained in the same place. A large number of previous housings for Pi2 are also suitable for the Raspberry Pi3 model B. Only the LEDs require new openings or a compatible black/grey or red/white Pi 3 case from the Raspberry Pi Foundation.
Attention:
There is also a change in the power supply! Due to the more powerful processor (1.2GHz CPU) and the integrated WLAN/Bluetooth radio chip, the energy consumption has increased. A new power supply unit (MircoUSB) is required, as the usual 5V/2A Micro USB plug-in power supply units are no longer sufficient for the new Raspberry Pi3 Model B. Please note that the compatible MicroUSB power supply with 5.1 volts and 2.5 amps should be ordered at the same time. This power supply is only suitable for the Pi3 and should only be used with the board!
